Global Shared Learning Classroom

Global Shared Learning Classroom or Global Classroom is an international experience from the Vice-Rectory for International Affairs at Tecnológico de Monterrey under the Global Shared Learning (GSL) initiative.

In this experience, a Tec de Monterrey course is linked with one or more courses from an international university, through an international element, using technological tools to connect students, foster collaboration and facilitate learning in intercultural environments. Through Global Classroom, 9,467 undergraduate students from 124 universities in 31 countries have been impacted.

  • Benefits for the institutions
  • To generate experiences of internationalization with meaningful learning, linking the student to a multicultural, collaborative and knowledge  integrating environment.
  • To promote global learning by exposing the student to real problems in an international context, allowing the development of skills, fostering diversity, inclusion, and appreciation of other cultures and their own.
  • To enable the internationalization and linking of professors, generating opportunities for professional development and research with international colleagues.

The GSL Classroom model is based on COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), a teaching and learning methodology developed by Jon Rubin at the State University of New York (SUNY).

COIL combines the four essential dimensions of virtual mobility: it is an exercise in collaboration between teachers and students; makes use of technology and online interaction; it has potential international dimensions; is integrated into the learning process.

Global Classroom is primarily aimed at those students and professors at the undergraduate level who seek an approach to interaction in an international environment. The initiative enriches learning strategies and has the potential to transform the classroom by offering an international experience where participants can improve intercultural communication skills, critical thinking, decision-making, and digital skills.

The experience is embedded in a course of each of the participating universities partially or totally and the duration of this can be extended throughout the course or applied in a specific module or topic with a minimum duration of four weeks.

Professors can decide on the elements such as the type of partner they consider convenient for the collaboration, the total duration of the experience, the type of interaction (synchronous or asynchronous), the type of activities, and the evaluation rubric, among others. other academic elements.

Participating teachers work together to design three main activities focused on the interaction between students in digital environments, collaborative work in multicultural teams to fulfill a common goal, and reflection on the differences and similarities with their peers during the collaboration.

In order for the international component to receive recognition from the Vice-Rectory for International Affairs as Global Classroom, it must meet the following conditions:

  • Have the authorization of the Office of the Vice-Rectory for International Affairs through the mechanisms established by this.
  • Include joint design of activities by the teachers of each participating institution. Incorporate the activities into a course in both institutions.
  • Integrate the COIL Methodology (Collaborative Online International Learning).
  • Integrate at least one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations.
  • Have a minimum length of 4 weeks with at least 12 hours of total work, of which at least 2 hours of synchronous work is recommended.
  • Have an impact of at least 10% on the final grade of the Tec course of which it is part.
  • The participation of students from Tecnológico de Monterrey is mandatory.

Testimonials

"It is a very good achievement to break down the stereotypes… Honestly, I think we accomplished a great thing by making students realize that people are people no matter where they live and that we have the same hopes and dreams."

Sheila Eldred, Professor @ SUNY Broome

"We are Global Citizens, we get to learn from other cultures, we understand others, and when we understand others and where they are coming from, then maybe we are able to really stop and make better decisions."

Lay-Wah Carolina Ching Chiang, student @ Tec de Monterrey
